Multidecadal climate variability in the Greenland Sea and surrounding regions: a coupled model simulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pronounced oscillations of ocean temperature and salinity occur in the Greenland Sea in a 2000 year integration of a coupled ocean-atmosphere model. The oscillations, involving both the surface and subsurface ocean layers, have a timescale of approximately 40-80 years, and are associated with fluctuations in the intensity of the East Greenland Current. The Greenland Sea temperature and salinity variations are preceded by large-scale changes in near-surface salinity in the Arctic, which appear to propagate out of the Arctic through the East Greenland Current. These anomalies then propagate around the subpolar gyre into the Labrador Sea and the central North Atlantic. These oscillations are coherent with previously identified multi-decadal fluctuations in the intensity of the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation. The oscillations in the G•:eenland Sea are related to atmospheric variability. Negative (cold) anomalies of surface air temperature are associated with negative (cold) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Greenland Sea, with amplitudes up to 2øC near Greenland declining to several tenths of a degree C over northwestern Europe. The c01d SST anomalies and intensified East Greenland Current are also associated with enhanced northerly winds over the Greenland Sea.

A predictability study of simulated North Atlantic multidecadal variability
The North Atlantic is one of the few places on the globe where the atmosphere is linked to the deep ocean through air—sea interaction. While the internal variability of the atmosphere by itself is only predictable over a period of one to two weeks, climate variations are potentially predictable for much longer periods of months or even years because of coupling with the ocean. This work present...
متن کاملSensitivity of thermohaline circulation to decadal and multidecadal variability
In this paper, stochastic freshwater inputs with different variabilities are introduced into an Earth Model of Intermediate Complexity to study their effect on the behaviour of the thermohaline circulation (THC). The variability in the stochastic signal was set to be either decadal or multidecadal (70 years), based on intensity modulation of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. T...
متن کاملCharacteristics and climate impacts of sea ice in the glacial North Atlantic
North Atlantic sea ice displacements are thought to play an important role in the abrupt Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) cycles of the last glacial period. This model study investigates sea ice variability in glacial climates to help provide constraints on its involvement in D-O cycles. Sea ice variability in a coupled climate model simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum (21 ka) is concentrated in the...
متن کاملGreenland ice core evidence for spatial and temporal variability of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation
[1] The Greenland dO ice core record is used as a proxy for Greenland surface air temperatures and to interpret Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) variability. An analysis of annual dO data from six Arctic ice cores (five from Greenland and one from Canada’s Ellesmere Island) suggests a significant AMO spatial and temporal variability within a recent period of 660 years. A dominant AMO per...
متن کاملForced and Internal Twentieth-Century SST Trends in the North Atlantic*
In recent years, two alarming trends in North Atlantic climate have been noted: an increase in the intensity and frequency of Atlantic hurricanes and a rapid decrease in Greenland ice sheet volume. Both of these phenomena occurred while a significant warming took place in North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), thus sparking a debate on whether the warming is a consequence of natural cl...
